Another Washington Big Oil Special Interest Group Does Sununu’s Political Dirty Work, Attacks Shaheen on Radio

Today, another shadowy Washington special interest group that’s funded by the oil industry and has ties to John Sununu launched another round of negative attacks on Governor Shaheen. D.C. based Americans for Prosperity is a group founded by John Sununu’s allies dedicated to electing Republican candidates. The group’s chairman and founder is Big Oil billionaire David Koch, who has donated $1,000 to Sununu’s campaigns. Koch’s brother Charles also donated $1,000 to Sununu. Click for full posting.

Chuck McGee: “Something that’s pretty damaging”

Charles “Chuck” McGee served as executive director of the New Hampshire Republican Party in 2002 when the party paid telemarketers to jam the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s and the Manchester Firefighter’s phones on election day.  That same day John Sununu narrowly defeated Jeanne Shaheen.  McGee was convicted on felony charges for his actions and served prison time.  Yet on August 7th we obtained this footage:

Anti-worker group attacks Shaheen on TV

Just this weekend, another outside group began airing TV ads in New Hampshire attacking Jeanne Shaheen.  Richard Berman, the founder of the group, has a long history of fighting against the rights of workers – including opposing minimum wage increases for over a decade.  Berman made his reputation defending the big tobacco industry as a PR man trying to cover up the actions that have hurt so many Americans and even said that there is no evidence that second hand smoke causes cancer. Who is AJS?
Americans for Job Security (AJS) is a shady front group that does John Sununu’s political dirty work. The group has long ties to John Sununu and his family, and they spent over $1 million delivering attacks against Gov. Shaheen in her 2002 race for U.S. Senate all so John Sununu could go to the Senate and vote with George Bush 90% of the time. Click for full posting.

Jeanne Shaheen has a long track record of supporting the rights and needs of workers. When she was governor, Shaheen fought to ensure that workers left jobless after mill closings in the North Country received the support they deserved. She saved hundreds of jobs by reopening mills [Nashua Telegraph, 1/7/03]. All in all, Jeanne Shaheen created 66,965 jobs while governor while keeping New Hampshire’s unemployment rate and poverty rate among the lowest in the country [BLS;CL 77,2002; U.S. Census Bureau, Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2003]. NHDP Files Complaint Against AJS Radio Ad

In June, a Americans for Job Security (AJS) launched two radio at a cost of more than $88,000 each. These attacks were designed to distort Governor Shaheen’s record on taxes. The fact is that as Governor Jeanne Shaheen kept taxes the lowest in the nation. Yet more troubling than the attacks was their source. The shadowy group called Americans for Job Security claims to be a tax-exempt non profit with no political purpose. The truth, however, was that these ads were aimed directly at Jeanne Shaheen and her candidacy for Senate. Hiding behind a section of the tax code designed for trade associations, the group refuses to disclose its donors, raising the possibility that illegal corporate money may be at work. The New Hampshire Democratic Party filed the following FEC complaint citing the groups refusal to reveal their donor and question that “not-for-profit status.” Click for full posting.
